12 Favorite Winter Activities in St. Augustine
With our moderate winter temperatures, our beautiful beaches are a great place for a walk or even to spend the day! No room to bring beach items? Not to worry, we have several local businesses which specialize in beach item rentals and will deliver them right to your location!
In your second childhood (or haven’t left your first?), then the Fountain of Youth is the place for you! It is the site of the first colonial settlement in America and you must take a drink from Ponce De Leon’s Spring of Eternal Hope. The flock of peafowl are always fun to see and if you are visiting anytime until June, you just might see the beautiful displays the peacocks put on for the peahens! There are many living history exhibits there as well as a planetarium that shows the night sky as Pedro Menendez saw it as he sailed to the New World.
The St. Augustine Alligator Farm is always a worthwhile way to spend your time, especially as January to June is the breeding season for our local bird population (and the gators as well!) and as you walk the boardwalk back in the swamp, you will see many birds building their nests, sitting on eggs, and hatchlings. There are many shows and exhibits there as well.
The Castillo De San Marcos, built in 1672, is the oldest masonry fort in America and still proudly stands on the bayfront (it was never breached in battle!) and is always interesting to visit. Due to Covid-19, it would be good to call to make sure of operating hours. However, whether you can access the interior or not, it is a beautiful walk around the grounds with excellent photo ops of the fort and the bay.
St. George Street is a pedestrian only zone with wonderful shops, galleries, and restaurants to explore. You can’t leave this street without a gourmet popsicle from The Hyppo or a stop into Kilwin’s for fudge or a caramel apple.
Since this is regarded as the most haunted city in America, a Ghost Tour is always a great way to hear all the ghost stories and lore surrounding our historic town.
A little further afield is the IMAX Theater and the World Golf Hall of Fame but well worth the drive for both experiences. For the golfer we have many fine courses in our area.
Relaxation and wine go hand in hand and a great place for both is the San Sebastian Winery with tours available and the Cellar Upstairs for live music along with light fare and adult beverages on the weekends. The St. Augustine Distillery is another wonderful place for tastings.
For kayakers and birdwatchers, Anastasia State Park is a perfect place for both with 1600 acres of white sand beaches, tidal marshes, and marine hammocks.
The St. Augustine Lighthouse offers spectacular views from the top (be prepared to walk up and down 229 steps!) and the Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of this iconic part of St. Augustine.
For the history buff, there are many opportunities to take part in interactive history with the Colonial Quarter, the Oldest House Museum, the Old Jail, and the Fountain of Youth.
